Solid basket choice : Yakima BasketCase Rooftop Cargo Basket
I am one of those people that would really love to own a truck, but really only need one about six times a year. So I have had to figure out how to turn my 1998 VW Jetta into a "part time truck". After taking measurements on the placements my existing roof rack, a old but extremely solid, square bar, Barrecrafter locking rack, I hoped that this rack would work. It works perfect! I was able to make a quick trip to my local hardware store to pick up some locking nuts to use instead of the ones that came with the basket. This allowed me to mount the rack just below the top of the cross bars. This setup allows me to still carry 2X4,4X4,fencing pickets, ect and strap them down on the rack as if the basket was not even there. I can also attach my Thule Pod to this setup and not have to remove the basket. I did have to reset the attachment points on the pod after spreading the distance on the rack to fit the basket below the bars. This was a minor inconvenience and no big deal. This allows me to leave the basket on the rack full time and be available anytime it is needed. I can use this setup with my ski rack or bike attachments with the basket attached. I can pull the the roof rack with the basket still attached off the car, for washing and waxing the car, with just a little more effort than needed to remove just the racks. The basket attached to the roof rack adds about 15-17 lbs extra weight but I have been able to wrestle it off and back on by myself. I you have a taller vehicle than my Jetta it would be much safer for the cars paint to recruit someone to help you. The basket is well made and like I said it alone weights about 17 lbs. This addition to my rack system allows me to have that part time truck while still driving my much loved Jetta.
